Tennessee voters like the status quo. There will be almost no change in the makeup of the state legislature heading into 2021, with Republicans maintaining supermajorities in both chambers.
Democrats picked up only one seat in state elections, with Oak Hill Mayor Heidi Campbell beating incumbent Dr. Steve Dickerson in Senate District 20 by 52%-48%. The Republican majority in the Tennessee Senate is now 27-6, and the Republican majority in the House stayed at 73-26.
“Twenty-eight of 30 NFIB members endorsed by the NFIB Tennessee PAC won their races, a good indicator that the Tennessee General Assembly will remain favorable to small business,” said Tennessee State Director Jim Brown. “We’re also excited to see several strong newcomers from all three grand divisions who are very pro-small business.”
Brown noted 14 of 15 NFIB TN PAC-endorsed state Senate candidates won last night, while 75 of 79 endorsed House candidates by the NFIB TN PAC won.
In national races, NFIB Federal PAC-endorsed Republican Bill Hagerty won the open U.S. Senate handily over Democrat Marquita Bradshaw. NFIB members Diana Harshbarger and John Rose won their congressional races easily. The balance in U.S. House seats in Tennessee remains 7-2 in favor of Republicans.
