West Michigan City Named No. 1 Best Small City to Start a Business

Looking
to start or expand your Michigan small business? Then you may want to consider
launching it in one of three small cities that boast some of the best
business climates in the nation, according to a new study by WalletHub.

Holland,
Michigan, ranked as the nation’s best small city in which to start a business.

Analysts
from WalletHub set out ahead of National Small Business Week to compare the
business-friendly climates of 1,268 small cities across the nation, weighing 15
different variables such as “corporate taxes,” “office-space affordability,”
and “workforce educational attainment.”

“City
size matters when choosing a launching pad for a startup. And as many veteran
entrepreneurs — and failed startups — understand well, bigger is not always
better,” according to the survey’s authors. “Depending on an entrepreneur’s
type of business and personal preferences, a city with a smaller population can
be a better option.”

Meanwhile,
Southfield ranked No. 32. Kentwood ranked No. 51. Eastpointe ranked No. 65.
Midland, meanwhile, ranked No. 128. Allen Park ranked No. 141. Other Michigan
cities such as Inkster and East Lansing ranked far lower in the survey, at No.
898 and No. 895, respectively.

Kentwood,
for its part, tied for first with Dothan, Alabama, for the cheapest office
space in the nation.

For
Holland, the city’s Tulip Time festival, which kicks off this week, is a draw
for tourists from all over the world.

“We
love tourists and we’re excited about hosting people — because we do have the
lakes for the summer and tulip time in May — but that’s just the tip of the
iceberg,” Holland Mayor Nancy
DeBoer

told Detroit’s WWJ.
