City ranks 139th out of 150.
Portland ranked poorly on a new list of best places to start a business, coming in at 139th out of the 150 biggest cities in the country.
The 2015 study from WalletHub took into account a variety of factors: accessibility of financing, affordability of office space, employee availability, median annual income, corporate taxes, cost of living, length of average workday, workforce education, entrepreneurial activity, five-year establishment survival rate, number of small businesses per capita, industry variety and the Small Business Friendliness Index.
The study ranked Shreveport, Louisiana, as the best big city in the U.S. to start a business, and Newark, New Jersey, the worst. Washington’s cities fared a little better than Portland: Tacoma ranked 116th, Seattle 125th and Vancouver 132nd. Spokane was 40 on the list.
Portland’s ranking was hardly changed from last year, when it was 138th in the country.
In another recent study, WalletHub rated the top 65 best-run big cities in the country. Portland came in at 25th on that list.
