Shop Small on Small Business Saturday, November 24

Date: November 19, 2018

Research shows money spent at a local retailer or restaurant stays in the community

Small Business Saturday, November 24th, is a day set aside to show support for local small businesses. The day, created in 2010 by American Express, has become a popular way for members of the community to support and celebrate local small businesses. It offers an opportunity to enjoy a stroll down your town’s Main Street one day after the hustle bustle of Black Friday.

There are many benefits to shopping at small businesses all over our state on this special day. Small stores carry unusual gifts you might not find at a chain store, and many are running specials on Small Business Saturday. A business owner will offer great personal service because they want return customers.

It’s also a way to boost the local economy. Most of the money you spend at a local small business stays in your community. The small business owners hire your friends and neighbors, and they often support local teams and charitable causes.

A survey just released by American Express and NFIB found that about 67 cents of every dollar spent at a small business remains in the community. It determined that nine in ten (91%) consumers believe it is more important than ever to support small businesses this holiday season, and 83% plan to do at least some portion of their holiday shopping at a small, independently owned retailer or restaurant – either in person or online.

Small business is a powerful economic engine employing about half of the national workforce. Supporting its success helps keep that engine running.
