NFIB State Director Nicole Riley says this weekend’s sales tax holiday on clothing, school supplies, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star and WaterSense products should help the commonwealth’s small businesses.
“A lot of stores, including a lot of small businesses, already are having back-to-school sales,” Riley said. “When you combine those deals with the sales tax holiday, you’re really going to put people in the mood to shop.” Virginia’s sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday and ends at 11:59 Sunday.
NFIB, the commonwealth’s leading small-business association, is urging people to shop small this weekend, Riley said.
“You’ll find some real bargains at small, locally-owned businesses, and you’ll find things you won’t see at the big chain stores,” Riley said. “Plus, when you support small, locally-owned businesses, you’re supporting the businesses that support our schools and communities and create jobs.” According to the latest figures from the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses employ 99.5% of Virginia’s private-sector workforce.
