New Gas Fees Will Add to Already High Cost of Doing Business in Massachusetts

Date: December 18, 2018

In response to the proposal requiring carbon permits in an attempt to disincentivize fuel usage in Massachusetts by increasing fuel costs for motorists, NFIB’s Massachusetts State Director, Christopher Carlozzi, said:

“Thousands of businesses and commuters in the Commonwealth will incur higher expenses – not only directly at the pump but also indirectly for a wide array of goods and services as the impact of new gas fees ripples through the economy,” said Christopher Carlozzi, NFIB’s Massachusetts State Director. “This is a fiscally dangerous and regressive proposal that will harm Massachusetts consumers and our state economy.”

New gas fees will disproportionately impact smaller businesses, where growth and job creation are already endangered by rising labor, energy and healthcare costs.

“If travel costs increase, customers consolidate their purchases with fewer shopping outings, buying their groceries, clothing, appliances etc. in a single location,” said Carlozzi. “From restaurants to lodging to retail, fuel cost increases will further strain struggling Massachusetts Main Street businesses.”
