Boston Ranked A Top City For Seniors

Date: August 12, 2015

Survey Gives City High Marks For Ease Of Access To Goods, Services

According to a recent survey by real estate firm Redfin, Boston is among the best cities in the US for technology-assisted living, making it an attractive place for seniors to live. Boston was ranked sixth out of the 52 largest US cities examined. Researchers then looked for those cities that were served by technology apps Porch, Uber, Rover, Instacart, and CarLinx, all of which would provide goods and services for seniors such as transportation, groceries, maintenance, and care such as bathing and dressing assistance. The 14 cities with all these available services were then ranked based on affordability of staying in-home with a mortgage compared to average monthly assisted living facility costs. The Boston Business Journal reports that in June the median monthly mortgage was $2,280 compared to the median assisted living facility cost of $4,504, making staying in-home with technology services an affordable option for many seniors. Redfin real estate agent for Boston James Gulden noted, “Our city is also the third most walkable in the U.S., according to Walk Score, and we have commuter rails and subway systems that make owning a car an option rather than a necessity.”

What This Means For Small Businesses

Boston-area small business owners are seeking indications their city is an attractive place to live. The latest survey showing Boston is a good place to be a senior is positive because it suggests the city can not only attract residents, but also retain them through all stages of life. Small business owners therefore have a diverse consumer base who can benefit from their goods and services, helping to strengthen the local economy.
