DOL REPORT SPELLS TROUBLE FOR 2016 BUT ITS NOT TOO LATE TO TURN THE TIDE

HARTFORD (March 18, 2016): The following remarks may be
attributed to Andrew Markowski, National Federation of Independent Business
(NFIB) Connecticut state director in response to today’s release of the
Connecticut Economic Digest by the state Department of Labor.

2016 certainly had a
precarious beginning for the small business community and today’s report
reflects that sentiment. An increase in unemployment coupled with a ballooning
budget deficit spell economic trouble for the state of Connecticut. Unfortunately
we are only beginning to see the side effects of policy decisions made recently
that created a downright hostile environment in which to operate a business.

Our hope lies in
recent statements made by Governor Malloy that demonstrate he has finally come
to terms with the economic reality of Connecticut and is ready to make the
difficult decisions necessary to improve our budget situation. Reducing the
size of our bureaucracy and allowing small businesses to operate unencumbered
by over regulation and unnecessary taxes will aid everyone in our state and put
us on the path to economic prosperity.
