California Tax and Budget Research Project established as the information center for efforts
NFIB was on board for the launch of the California Tax and Budget Research Project, September 23, joining the California Chamber of Commerce and the California Taxpayers Association (CalTax) for a unified effort to stop the state’s sales tax from being extended to include services.
“California families and small businesses are already grappling with the astronomical costs of housing, with roads in need of repair, and with the high cost of living and doing business here—we do not need another tax to make things worse,” said NFIB State Director John Kabateck in a news release issued by the chamber. “A sales tax on services is effectively a tax on housing, a tax on infrastructure and a tax on everyday goods and services.”
The California Tax and Budget Research Project will educate Californians about the harmful effects a new sales tax on services will have on the economy, taxpayers, and consumers.
Allan Zaremberg, president and CEO of the state chamber, said, “If the problem is budget volatility, then a sales tax on services is not the solution, no matter how it’s structured. Once you strip away this pretense, you see that a new services tax is just another tax that will simply make services more unaffordable for all Californians.”

“What small-business owners as a group lack in campaign-donation might, they more than make up for in the influence their opinions have within their communities, which is why coalitions clamor to have us on board,” said Kabateck, who called on California NFIB members to start educating the people around them about why it’s not good to extend the sales tax on services.
“The California Tax and Budget Research Project is the central resource for the facts and information we need for the fight. I encourage everyone to check in with it periodically,” said Kabateck.
