Bi-partisan coalition concludes months-long effort to remind Californians of the importance of property tax relief
An educational campaign to remind Californians about the importance of Prop. 13 protections for their homes and businesses concluded with the January 8 delivery of 200,000 petitions to Gov. Gavin Newsom and state legislators calling on them to preserve the nationally famous initiative.
“For more than 40 years, Prop 13 has provided property tax certainty to homeowners, renters and businesses. Under Prop 13, general property taxes for both residential and business properties are calculated based on 1 percent of the purchase price. Annual increases in property valuations are capped at 2 percent per year, which helps provide certainty to homeowners and businesses that they will be able to afford their property in the future,” according to a news release from the Fight for Prop 13 coalition, which NFIB California is a member of.
NFIB State Director John Kabateck, pictured below, spoke at a press conference announcing the delivery of the petitions. Protecting Proposition 13 from Legislative and ballot box assaults is among the top priorities of NFIB in 2020.
For 40 years, Proposition 13 has provided small-business owners with the one protection they have in a state that is the most highly taxed in the nation. According to an NFIB Research Foundation Poll, only 22 percent of small-business owners own the facility from which they operate their enterprises out of. In addition to an expected ballot initiative aimed at chipping away the small-business protections in Proposition 13, legislative efforts to do the same are expected to resurface in 2020. NFIB will continue to remind legislators that mom-and-pop businesses will pay higher rents if Prop. 13 is allowed to become a split-roll tax.
