Here’s a look at some of the issues small business be facing in next year’s session of the General Assembly:
TAX REFORM
Virginia’s revenue forecast anticipates as $4 billion in additional money over the next 5 years. NFIB will continue to advocate for more substantial tax reform to ensure Virginia’s small businesses and families receive tax relief. One of those reforms includes finding solutions to eliminate the business, professional, and occupational license tax.
EMPLOYMENT MANDATES
In the 2019 session of the General Assembly, we saw an increase in the number of proposals to impose additional mandates on small businesses related to labor and employment practices. Many of these proposals are backed by Big Labor and other progressive groups. These proposals would make it harder to utilize independent contractors, would make small businesses the target of lawsuits, create additional paperwork and increase compliance costs.
HEALTHCARE
Governor Northam vetoed several bills aimed at providing more choice in the individual and small group markets for affordable health insurance plans. NFIB will continue to pursue these and other solutions at the state level to provide relief from rising healthcare costs and premiums.
