An Update on Missouri's Legislative Session

Date: May 19, 2015

State director Brad Jones discusses topics from this year's legislative session, including unemployment insurance and sales tax.

Dear NFIB/Missouri Members,

With all of the bluster, drama and fanfare of a good Hollywood mystery, the Missouri General Assembly adjourned for another session. To say that this was a memorable five months would be a gross understatement. However, after all the smoke cleared, some good bills did pass that will help small business owners.

The same unemployment insurance reform bill that was passed and vetoed last year was passed again. Once again the governor vetoed the bill. The House had just enough votes to override the veto; however, the override vote was never taken in the Senate due to their week-long filibuster. We also sent a couple of bills to the governor that deal with our Missouri tax code. Requiring the Department of Revenue to notify tax payers before there is a change in who needs to pay sales tax seems to be a common sense direction that the department has failed to take. That bill, along with a call to review the overall tax code, are both positive measures that should be signed by the governor. Finally, in the last week, the Senate used a seldom used procedure to pass Right to Work. The bill has gone to the governor and we anticipate a swift veto. NFIB will be working over the summer to secure the necessary votes to override this important piece of legislation.

Regards,
Brad Jones
NFIB/Missouri State Director
