An Update from Your NFIB/Louisiana State Director

Louisiana Small Business Owners – We hope you are having a great summer and that your business is doing well!

The legislature has gone home. However there are a couple of important task forces meeting to determine what recommendations to make to the Governor and Legislature about how to fix the state’s recurring budget issues.

The Task Force on Structural Reform has been meeting since March to discuss ideas like “broadening the base and flattening the rate”, removing the inventory tax credit or the tax altogether, expanding sales tax on services and a variety of other tax policy changes. The final report of this group is due by September so we expect to begin seeing some details to these proposals later in the fall. We will survey our membership to find out how you feel the proposals will impact your business. Please stay tuned for that.

Additionally, there is the SCR 6 Task Force, which is looking at ITEP and the Inventory Tax, and the Sales Tax Streamlining Task Force. NFIB has seats on both of these task force and we are working to insure changes to these areas take into consideration the impact on small business.

Election season is upon us! Over 20 candidates are running for the open US Senate seat, along with crowded fields for the US House of Representatives seats. NFIB’s SAFE Trust PAC will likely make a number of endorsements in the races to ensure we elect pro-small business candidates. Stay tuned for more information on those races and election activity.

Finally, we are in the midst of hurricane season and we encourage all our members to be sure they have a game plan when it comes to emergency weather. Business continuity planning is a key to being prepared. There are some great resources available at https://www.ready.gov/hurricane-toolkit to help you ensure your business is ready for a hurricane!

We appreciate your membership!
