A Message from your NFIB Michigan State Director

Date: March 27, 2018

Your NFIB staff in Michigan, from left to right, State Director Charles Owens, Assistant State Director Amanda Fisher, and Administrative Assistant Andrea Conarton.

The state House and Senate are on break for spring recess, returning April 10. It has been a busy spring session with some great wins for Michigan small business!

First and foremost, legislation holding Michigan’s small business harmless from federal tax changes (because of the loss of the personal exemption) was signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder in March. In addition, the changes to Michigan’s income tax signed into law will result in an additional tax cut for most small businesses with the personal exemption increased to $4,900 by 2021. This was Priority 1 on our Main Street Agenda for 2018!

Shortly after the Legislature adjourned for spring break, the governor signed NFIB backed Senate Bill 353 into law. Now Local governments can no longer pass ordinances that prevent employers from asking applicants about their wage history in a job interview or application. The law advances NFIB efforts to halt local government micro-management of small business. The bill is now Public Act 84 of 2018.

In January of 2018, the Michigan Legislature voted to override Gov. Rick Snyder’s veto of NFIB supported legislation accelerating the phase-in of the sales tax on the difference for trade-ins on vehicles and recreational vehicle purchases. This marks the first gubernatorial veto override since 2002. The bills were originally vetoed in July of 2017 after passing both the House and Senate. Now, the acceleration of the sales tax on the difference increases the amount of a trade-in’s value exempt from the sales tax by $1,000 a year instead of the current $500 and the tax on the value of a trade-in would be eliminated 10 years sooner by 2029 instead of the previously planned 2039.

While passing legislation that helps small business is a big part of what we do for you here at NFIB, it is only half the story. Often stopping bad legislation, rules, and proposals from ever becoming law are just as important. There is no shortage of bad ideas that must be challenged if we are to continue making Michigan a great place of prosperity and opportunity for small business. Proposed increases in Unemployment Insurance taxes, mandated paid leave, increases in the minimum wage, and more rules and regulation are just some of the issues NFIB is working to defeat. You can learn more about those HERE.

Let’s work together to make Michigan the best state for small business in 2018!
