NFIB supports a bill reducing the state tax on business personal property
NFIB State Director Ben Homeyer said today that the nation’s leading small business advocacy organization is launching a statewide radio advertising campaign urging lawmakers to pass the State of South Carolina Small Business Tax Cut of 2026.
The measure, House Bill 5006, would exempt the first $10,000 of a small business’s net depreciated business personal property from taxation. The bill also would eliminate filing requirements for businesses below that threshold. H.5006 passed the House on Feb. 12 and now awaits action in the Senate.
The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness of the issue and direct listeners to NFIB.com/SouthCarolina, where they can learn more and send messages to their legislators about the bill. To hear the radio ad, click here.
“Usually, when you buy something, you pay sales tax once,” Homeyer said. “Small businesses pay that sales tax. Then every year, they also pay a business personal property tax on the same equipment, the same desks and chairs, the same laptops and tools, year after year.
“That’s not fair,” he said, noting that before session began, 96% of NFIB small business members surveyed supported the legislation.
“Our current system discourages investment and makes it harder for small businesses to grow and create jobs,” Homeyer said. “Our members need the Senate to pass H.5006 and help ease the financial burden on Main Street businesses.”
NFIB is a member-driven organization advocating on behalf of small and independent businesses nationwide.
