Action Alert: Tell Gov. Newsom to Veto Senate Bill 512

Action Alert: Tell Gov. Newsom to Veto Senate Bill 512

September 25, 2025

Measure seeks to undermine Proposition 13 property tax protections

From now until an October 12 deadline, Gov. Gavin Newsom will be either signing or vetoing bills put on his desk by the Legislature. Through its Action Alerts, NFIB will keep small business owners posted on legislation that they are highly encouraged to register their opinions on with the governor.

First up is Senate Bill 512 (Perez), which we are asking the governor to veto. Click here to lend your voice to the cause.

SB 512 would undermine Proposition 13, the last protection of tax certainty for business and homeowners in California. The bill would codify ‘workarounds’ by allowing local elected officials to lower the two-thirds voting threshold for approval of special taxes.

The last thing we need, especially in the current economic climate, is to make it easier for local governments to raise our taxes. Small business owners have frequently and fervently opposed changes to Prop 13 since it was passed nearly 50 years ago.

Ask Governor Newsom to veto Senate Bill 512. Time is slipping away. Act now. Act here.

Further information about SB 12 can be read in a ‘Request for Veto’ letter NFIB and its coalition partners sent to the governor.
