This year's tax-free weekend begins Friday, July 11-13, and covers purchases of clothing, footwear, and school supplies
NFIB State Director Leah Long says the nation’s leading small business advocacy organization is urging Mississippi shoppers to take advantage of the state’s annual sales tax holiday this weekend by shopping at locally-owned small businesses.
The tax-free weekend begins Friday, July 11, and runs through Sunday, July 13, and covers purchases of clothing, footwear, and school supplies priced under $100 per item.
“This is a great opportunity for families to save money while supporting the local,” Long said. “Small business is the foundation of Mississippi’s economy. Small businesses create jobs, give to local charities, and donate to school fundraisers.
“When you shop local, more of your money stays in Mississippi,” she said.
This year’s tax holiday comes at a time when Mississippi small businesses are working through a complex economic environment. According to the latest NFIB Small Business Economic Trends report, released today, the national Small Business Optimism Index ticked down slightly in June to 98.6, just above its 51-year average. Concerns about taxes, excess inventory, and uneven consumer demand remain top challenges.
“Events like the sales tax holiday help level the playing field for small, independent retailers who are often competing with big-box stores and online giants,” Long said. “Shopping locally helps our communities stay economically strong.”
