Leadership Changes Govern 132nd Legislature

Leaders in the Senate and House are a mixture of legislators in new positions, familiar positions, and geographic concentration for the Democrats or dispersion for the Republicans.

Sen. Mattie Daughtry, who led the successful 2023 effort to enact the Paid Family and Medical Leave law, was elected to preside over the 35-member Senate.

Senate

  • President: Mattie Daughtry (D-Brunswick)
  • Majority Leader: Teresa Pierce (D-Falmouth)
  • Assistant Majority Leader: Jill Duson (D-Portland)
  • Minority Leader: Trey Stewart (R-Presque Isle)
  • Assistant Minority Leader: Matt Harrington (R-Sanford)

Newly elected Rep. Ryan Fecteau, who was termed out from running in 2022, was elected to preside over the House, a position he held in the 130th Legislature and earned bipartisan respect for the difficult task of managing the 151-member body.

House

  • Speaker: Ryan Fecteau (D-Biddeford)
  • Majority Leader: Matt Moonen (D-Portland)
  • Assistant Minority Leader: Lori Gramlich (D-Old Orchard Beach)
  • Minority Leader: Billy Bob Faulkingham (R-Winter Harbor)
  • Assistant Minority Leader: Katrina Smith (R-Palermo)

Senate and House co-chairs of joint standing committees will be named later this month.  The full list of committee members and co-chairs also may be released by late December.
