Small Business Victory: General Assembly protects Missouri’s small businesses from predatory trial attorneys

Small business owners statewide have received demand letters from predatory trial attorneys, claiming their websites don’t comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and demanding thousands of dollars in settlements.

No official ADA compliance requirements for websites exist, yet these attorneys are demanding settlements of up to $15,000 – knowing small businesses will often settle as quickly as possible to protect their reputation and avoid mounting costs.

It’s wrong for predatory trial attorneys to use the transformative work of the ADA against small business owners. These shake-down lawsuits are just the latest example of the legal abuse Main Street Missourians face.

That’s why NFIB championed SB 907, which aims to stop trial attorneys’ attempts to force a settlement without allowing the business to resolve the issue. The bill passed the General Assembly unanimously and is now with the Governor for his signature.

Vote to stop ADA lawsuit abuse

Our office has been harassed by an attorney in St Louis about suing us for our website not accommodating the blind and deaf. Months of letters and phone calls. I greatly appreciate your help putting an end to this fraudulent manipulation of our legal system.
