CARSON CITY, Nev., Feb. 1, 2024—Are small business owners giving up the search for workers? That is one of the questions raised today by the release of the latest Jobs Report from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the nation’s leading and largest small-business-advocacy association.

Responding to the report’s noting that small business owners’ plans to create new jobs fell to its lowest level since May 2020, Tray Abney NFIB’s Nevada state director said, “Our Jobs Reports have been consistently showing a struggle to find workers to fill open position for nearly two years, but plans to create new jobs had always remained robust—until now. I don’t want to read too much into one finding, but common sense leads you to believe that our political and educational policymakers are going to have to look at this more seriously if we’re to have a vibrant Main Street economy in Nevada.”

From NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg

“Although consumer spending remains strong, small business owners cannot find enough workers to fill their open positions. Owners continue to raise compensation to retain and attract workers with the skills and willingness to do the job, but hiring remains a struggle in the tight labor market.”

The NFIB Research Foundation has collected Small Business Economic Trends data with quarterly surveys since 1974 and monthly surveys since 1986. Survey respondents are drawn from NFIB’s membership. The survey was conducted in January 2024 and reflects a random sample of 10,000 small-business owners/members.
