JUNEAU, Alaska, July 2, 2025—From NFIB Alaska State Director Thor Stacey on today’s release of the monthly Jobs Report from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), showing 36% (seasonally adjusted) of small business owners reported job openings they could not fill in June, up two points from May.

“Adding to the hiring difficulties small businesses are having nationally is Alaska’s home-grown problem of the compliance headaches surrounding the Ballot Measure 1 law now in effect. Right now, NFIB is racing to make sure its small-business-owning members are fully aware of it and, later, will be working to smooth its rougher edges.”

NFIB’s Jobs Report is a national survey of NFIB-member small-business owners, not broken down by state. The typical NFIB member employs between one and nine people and reports gross sales of about $500,000 a year.

“Despite the slowing labor market, many small business owners are still looking to attract applicants and hire for their open positions. Compensation pressures remain strong for those owners who are competing to retain and attract talent in their business.”

Highlights from Latest NFIB Jobs Report

• Overall, 58% of small business owners reported hiring or trying to hire in June, up three points from May.
• Seasonally adjusted, a net 33% of small business owners reported raising compensation in June, up seven points from May, and the largest monthly increase since January 2020.
• A net 19% (seasonally adjusted) plan to raise compensation in the next three months, down one point from May.
• Job openings were the highest in the construction, manufacturing, and transportation industries, and the lowest in the finance and agriculture industries.
