NFIB State Director Brad Jones highlights small business victory advanced by General Assembly
Small business owners statewide have received demand letters from predatory trial attorneys, claiming their websites don’t comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and demanding thousands of dollars in settlements.
No official ADA compliance requirements for websites exist, yet these attorneys are demanding settlements of up to $15,000 – knowing small businesses will often settle as quickly as possible to protect their reputation and avoid mounting costs.
That’s why NFIB championed SB 907, which aims to stop trial attorneys’ attempts to force a settlement without allowing the business to resolve the issue. The bill passed the General Assembly unanimously and is now with the Governor for his signature.
“I just wanted to thank all of you who wrote in and called in to your legislators,’ NFIB State Director Brad Jones said. “Because we didn’t have a single negative vote in either committee, the House floor or the Senate floor. And now we’re certainly hoping that Governor Kehoe will be signing this bill.”
