Task Force Studies Employee Misclassification

NFIB State Director Dawn Starns McVea is a member of the state Misclassification of Employees Task Force, created in response to a resolution passed during the last special session of 2020.

“Some in the legislature believe small businesses are purposely misclassifying employees to avoid paying payroll taxes,” McVea said. “NFIB has been opposed to proposed new and onerous regulations and hefty fines on unsuspecting small business owners.

“We have shared with the task force that many small business owners unintentionally misclassify workers due to the nature of some jobs,” she said. “We believe education on the issue should be the first attempt at addressing the issue before establishing another government one size fits all regulation that will hurt small businesses the most.”
