Small Business: Keep Texas Competitive by Cutting the Inventory Tax

DALLAS (Jan. 12, 2023) — “I couldn’t make anything or sell anything if I didn’t have this inventory to start with,” NFIB member Andy Ellard said. “We use these metals to make the parts and then sell to the customer.”

In a conversation with CBS11, Ellard, who owns and manages Manda Machine Company in Dallas, explained why small businesses in Texas need the legislature to cut the inventory tax.

In 2021, the legislature increased the exemption from $500 to $2,500, the first increase since 1995. Governor Abbott has proposed increasing the exemption again, from $2,500 to $100,000. As CBS11 reports:

“Ellard said that would save the company about $2,000 a year in property taxes. ‘I think that $100,000 is a good starting point, but it needs to go up so that I can be competitive with California, with New York, with Oklahoma, Louisiana.’”
