NFIB Urges Senate Panel to Pass Lawsuit Abuse Bills

April 24, 2024 Last Edit: June 5, 2025

The legislation is aimed at stopping lawsuit abuse in Louisiana courts

NFIB State Director Leah Long released a statement today on five pieces of legislation – HB 24, HB 336, HB 423, SB 84, and SB 334 – meant to stop lawsuit abuse in Louisiana. All five bills are expected to come up tomorrow, April 25, in the Senate Committee on Judiciary A.

“Louisiana’s small businesses are dealing with a host of economic challenges right now, but frivolous lawsuits are making a bad situation even worse. You have a right to seek compensation if you’ve been wronged, but some lawsuits are brought simply because someone sees a chance to make a quick buck.

“Lawsuit abuse drives up insurance and other operating costs, which only worsens inflation’s impact on Louisiana businesses and families. That’s why our members are urging the Senate Judicial A Committee to pass these important bills.

“Unless these reforms reach the floor of the Louisiana Senate, the situation will never get any better, and Main Street businesses will continue to have to defend themselves against predatory lawsuits that could put them out of business.”
