State law gives the General Assembly the authority to impose a state property tax
NFIB has joined a coalition of Tennessee business groups in launching Yes on 2, a single measure committee to pass a state constitutional amendment banning a state property tax. The committee is chaired by Gov. Bill Lee.
Tennessee does not currently have a state property tax. Currently, local governments impose property taxes. However, state law permits the collection of a state property tax, and the state did so until 1949. Passage of Amendment 2 would prohibit the legislature from enacting a state property tax.
A recent poll commissioned by Yes on 2 showed that 64% of Tennessee voters support banning a state property tax.
“Passage of this amendment would help ensure that Tennessee remains a good place for entrepreneurs to own, operate, and grow their businesses,” NFIB State Director Jim Brown said.
In addition to NFIB, coalition members include the Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation, Tennessee REALTORS, Tennessee Chamber of Commerce, Americans for Prosperity, and the Beacon Center of Tennessee.
NFIB is a member-driven organization advocating on behalf of small and independent businesses nationwide.
