NFIB 2024 Legislative Prioirities in Iowa

In 2024, NFIB here in Iowa will be fighting for more income tax reforms. We will build upon the progress we made last year on property taxes to help set the stage for future and more dramatic property tax cuts; and we will continue to look for ways to reform/streamline government and regulatory regimes that create barriers to our small businesses in Iowa. 1. PROPERTY TAX REFORM • Property taxes in Iowa are too high, uncompetitive, and 120% more today than 20 years ago. • Out-of-control city and county budget increases along with unfair tax exemptions create an unsustainable property tax climate that continues to shift the burden of paying for essential public services onto the backs of small businesses and their employees. NFIB is urging Iowa Legislators to look at ways to rein in city and county budgets, limit property tax exemptions, and equalize the playing field for ALL property taxpayers in Iowa. 2. INCOME TAX REFORM • One of the top priorities for NFIB members continues to be the lowering of Iowa’s personal income tax rates. • The best and most fair way to give every small business and their employees more of their hard-earned money while ensuring continued economic growth in Iowa is through personal income tax cuts. NFIB is urging Iowa legislators to maintain a fiscally responsible budget, ensure that future income tax reductions remain on track, and continue to find ways to lower and eliminate Iowa’s personal income tax rate. 3. REGULATORY REFORM • Too many regulations drive up the costs of doing business beyond what is reasonable to protect health and safety, and those costs hinder economic growth and increase prices for consumers. • Iowa’s Administrative Code has ballooned to more than 20,000 pages and 190,000 restrictive terms. Many of these rules are outdated and unnecessary. NFIB is urging Iowa legislators to streamline government regulations to break the financial and time-consuming barriers for those who want to work and do business in Iowa.
