LISTEN: Local Job Creators Need Protecting From Middle-of-The-Night Ordinances That Increase the Cost of Doing Business

DALLAS (March 20, 2023) – “We’ve seen a trend in cities, not just our major urban cities, but our mid-sized cities that have been trying to step outside of their lane, their local jurisdiction, and regulate private employment practices and main streams of commerce,” NFIB State Director Annie Spilman said in an interview with Tom Giovanetti. “We’ve seen middle-of-the-night ordinances get passed telling small business owners that they need to provide costly mandated paid sick leave, predictive scheduling, or overtime pay. But hidden in those ordinances are very prescriptive compliance costs and burdens and give the city subpoena power over employers’ and employees’ records.” During their conversation, Spilman outlined how NFIB is urging lawmakers to support the Texas Regulatory Consistency Act, legislation giving small business owners one set of rules to follow statewide. Describing how challenging the economic headwinds are for small business owners, Spilman also underscored the need for meaningful property tax relief this session. Spilman said:

“At the end of the day, NFIB is telling both bodies we need tax relief. We’ve polled our small business owners, and the inventory tax is the most burdensome among our members. We’ve seen a bill in the Senate, SB 5 proposed by Sen. Tan Parker (Flower Mound) that proposes raising the tax exemption from $2,500 to $25,000 and providing a tax credit on the franchise tax. We’re hoping to bump that up a little more and look forward to working with lawmakers on the nuts and bolts of that legislation.”
