Governor Wes Moore Warns of Looming Budget Deficits

Maryland Governor Wes Moore warned local officials about the projected budget deficits the state faces in future years as they gathered in Ocean City for the Maryland Association of Counties’ annual summer gathering last month. His remarks focused on the need for fiscal discipline and strategic investment of state dollars in the years ahead. Reports from the Department of Legislative Services project deficits exceeding $1 billion by 2028. Analysts highlighted the multi-billion-dollar overhaul of the state’s public education system as a key driver in the projected deficits. Lawmakers are required to pass a balanced budget each year they meet during their annual 90-day legislative session. The next one begins January 10, 2024.
