New York lawmakers have doubled down with a state-level requirement to force small businesses to register personally identifiable information with the NY Department of State.

The National Federation of Independent Business’ “Small Business Rundown” podcast recently highlighted the pressing issue of beneficial ownership reporting requirements on small businesses, which is currently front-and-center in Albany.

While beneficial ownership reporting requirements are on hold nationwide for U.S. small businesses, in New York, state lawmakers have doubled down with a state-level requirement to force small businesses to register personally identifiable information with the New York Department of State. The 75th episode of the “Small Business Rundown” podcast discusses this onerous bill heading to Governor Kathy Hochul’s desk. NFIB State Region Director Greg Biryla, who previously served as NFIB’s NY State Director, and NFIB Director of Federal Government Relations Josh McLeod explain the legislation’s impact and what small business owners can do to fight back.

Recently, NFIB, the nation’s leading small business advocacy association with more than 11,000 members in New York, launched a statewide digital and print ad campaign to educate and activate small business owners in opposition to the state legislation creating a “Beneficial Ownership” information reporting rule. The campaign also includes a website, ProtectNYSmallBusiness.org, with more information about the legislation and its detrimental impact on small businesses.

The Small Business Rundown podcast offers small business owners an inside source in Washington, D.C. and the nation’s state capitals. Host Adam Temple and guests discuss and analyze the current issues and news that directly affect small businesses across the nation, including policies and programs, taxes and mandates, Supreme Court cases, and more.
