Tax Season Begins in Alabama

The Internal Revenue Service said today, Jan. 23, is the beginning of the nation’s 2023 tax season, the first day the agency will begin accepting and processing 2022 tax year returns. More than 168 million individual tax returns are expected to be filed, with the vast majority of those coming before the April 18 tax deadline. People have three extra days to file this year due to the calendar. Here in Alabama, the state Department of Revenue offered this advice to help you file your small business tax returns.
  • File your business’s W-2s on time. Employers may face penalties if they don’t file employee W-2 forms with the department by Jan. 31.
  • File your tax returns early. Filing early can help the department get refunds approved earlier and enables taxpayers to get ahead of ID thieves.
  • File electronically. Taxpayers who file their returns electronically and have their returns directly deposited into their bank accounts receive their refunds quicker than those who file paper returns. Click here to learn more about electronic filing.
