Small Business Applauds Vote on Property Insurance, Urges House to Vote 'Yes' on Related Bill

NFIB State Director Dawn McVea says small businesses applaud today’s vote in favor of legislation requiring insurers to let policyholders upgrade to a fortified roof in the event of damage that requires a replacement. HB 110 passed the House by a vote of 97-0. Owners are urging their representatives to vote “yes” on HB 183, a related bill that would protect small businesses and other policyholders from unscrupulous contractors and other scammers from stealing some or all of their insurance benefits. The House is expected to take up the bill as soon as tomorrow. “These reforms are long overdue,” McVea said. “Our current system makes it hard for local businesses and other property owners to recover from natural disasters and find affordable property insurance. “HB 110 is important because it would save policyholders and insurers a lot of money in the long run,” McVea said. “Replacing damaged roofs with a fortified roof may be more expensive up front but would ultimately save money by reducing the need for a new roof in the future and better protecting what’s inside from water and wind damage,” she said. “HB 183, meanwhile, would stop unscrupulous contractors from tricking policyholders into transferring their rights to someone else and siphoning some of the money meant for repairs,” she said. “Our hope is that the House gives HB 183 the same strong, bipartisan support it gave the roofing bill today and that the Senate follows suit,” McVea said.
