NFIB Nevada Victories from the 2023 Session of the Legislature

September 6, 2023

Bills raising costs, imposing more regulations part of governor’s record 75 vetoes

Defeated Extreme Environmental Justice Bills

Assembly Joint Resolution 3 sought to amend the Nevada Constitution to give everyone the “right” to clean air and water. Environmental protection is already well enforced by federal, state, and local government agencies. Enactment of this amendment would have exposed small business owners to potentially catastrophic lawsuits. AB 312 would have established an Environmental Justice Commission that could stifle future growth and development and make every public and private construction project more expensive. Due to NFIB’s efforts with other stakeholders, these proposals did not move forward.

Stopped Vague, One-Size-Fits-All, Heat-Protection Bill

Senate Bill 427 would have implemented new heat protection standards in the workplace, using vague definitions and a one-size-fits-all standard. NFIB believes that our state’s regulatory agencies are better equipped to enact rules that protect workers based on their specific circumstances. NFIB helped to defeat this bill.

Blocked Data Collection Tax

NFIB helped defeat Assembly Bill 421, which would have imposed a tax on businesses that collect consumer data.

Won Veto on Product Prohibition Legislation

Senate Bill 76 would have punished small retailers for selling common household items comprised of certain chemical compounds. NFIB lobbied Gov. Joe Lombardo for a veto and got it.

Worked with Governor to Defeat Bad-for-Small Business Legislation

Governor Lombardo issued 75 vetoes during the 2023 Legislative Session, a new single-session record. The governor’s vetoes included bills NFIB lobbied against that would have imposed new restrictions on small business retailers, increased health care costs, and wasted taxpayer dollars. NFIB worked closely with other trade groups in the business community to compel some of those vetoes.
