NFIB, Lawmakers, Community Leaders Oppose Proposal to Toll Pennsylvania Bridges

NFIB PA recently participated in the No P3 Bridge Tolls Coalition rally on the Capitol steps in Harrisburg. The rally included remarks from state legislators, county officials, statewide business organizations, local chambers, and economic development entities who oppose Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s P3 Major Bridge Tolling Initiative. The coalition is calling on the Wolf Administration and PennDOT to scrap the tolling proposal and work with organizations and stakeholders to find sustainable and equitable long-term solutions to funding Pennsylvania’s infrastructure needs. State Director Greg Moreland’s rally comments were quoted by CBS 21 News: “With diesel prices already sky high and no end in sight, shipping costs continue to crush our small and independent businesses.” “NFIB is happy to see the Commonwealth Court issue an injunction in this case, and we hope that the Department of Transportation will work more openly with the General Assembly and our small business community on a long-term solution,” said Moreland. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) plan proposes tolling to pay for bridge projects and has received an overwhelming amount of disapproval, including members of the General Assembly, local officials, businesses and Pennsylvania residents. PennDOT’s bridge tolling initiative would cost the average commuter an additional $1,000 per year and was moved through the process without legislative input nor approval.
