NFIB California in the News 2019-2020
The following sample of stories about NFIB’s small-business agenda span the years 2019 and 2020, coinciding with the two-year session of the California State Legislature. They are listed from the last clip in 2020 to the first in 2019. A separate NFIB California in the News story for 2021 will shortly be posted on the www.nfib.com/CA webpage.
2020
- Los Angeles Times, December 31—In a story on the new laws taking effect January 1 in California, reporter Margot Roosevelt quotes State Director John Kabateck on the family leave law (Senate Bill 1383) as forcing “our already fragile mom-and-pop owners to lay people off and shut their doors forever.” Roosevelt’s story ran throughout the state, including in all the Bee’s (Sacramento, Fresno, Modesto), the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Bakersfield Californian, and the Daily Republic (Solano County). It also received national pick up from coast to coast, including the Miami Herald, Kansas City Star, and The Olympian in Washington state.
- The Northern California Record, December 28—Karen Harned, executive director of NFIB’s Small Business Legal Center, discusses NFIB’s lawsuit against Cal/OSHA. “We believe the Emergency Temporary Standards (ETS) were illegally promulgated and are asking the court to make that finding and require California OSHA to stop enforcing them against California businesses.”
- Southern California Record, December 21—NFIB California Leadership Council member Ann Kinnear discusses the struggles small-business owners are facing during the COVID crisis. “We’re at about 40% now of what a normal year would look like and that still isn’t enough for me to feel comfortable taking payroll. I’m hoping that changes next month. We’ll see.”
- ABC News10, Sacramento, December 18—More coverage on NFIB/California’s lawsuit against Cal/OSHA. Karen Harned, executive director of NFIB’s Small Business Legal Center, tells the local affiliate about the necessity of bringing the lawsuit.
- The Sacramento Bee, December 17—NFIB California’s lawsuit, along with the National Retail Federation, claiming Cal/OSHA illegally overreached on its latest COVID-19 rules received coverage from the Capitol’s leading newspaper. The Bee’s story also ran in the Daily Republic (Solano County) and in The Fresno Bee. Also publishing and broadcasting the lawsuit were Bloomberg Law, Sacramento Business Journal, Law360, the San Francisco Chronicle, KABC-AM 790 in Los Angeles, KNX-AM 1070 in Los Angeles, and KOGO-AM 600 in San Diego.
- Citizens Journal, December 17—News release of NFIB California’s lawsuit against Cal/OSHA published by the online news site for Ventura County, which also ran NFIB’s news release on the latest poll results of its membership.
- The Epoch Times, December 7—“There’s a better way to do this,” State Director John Kabateck tells the national publication about Gov. Gavin Newsom’s regional business shutdowns if ICU availability falls below 15 percent. “The swift closure of businesses in all parts of the state is irrational, devastating, and unnecessary.”
- Northern California Record, December 7—State Director John Kabateck informs the online news site that “Congress needs to act now to produce more federal funding streams so that these businesses are not being forced to close their doors because they can’t make payments. There needs to be a pathway to recovery.”
- Sacramento Business Journal, December 4—NFIB’s news release on the governor’s stay-at-home order prompts the magazine to write a fuller story. NFIB’s news release was also picked up by the Citizens Journal and Before It’s News.
- Reason, December 4—The Libertarian magazine quotes NFIB California on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s latest stay at home order.
- KQED-FM, NPR, San Francisco, December 2—What will happen if another shutdown is ordered? State Director John Kabateck says, “Our economy will crumble. People will be out of jobs and we will see more devastation before 2021 even arrives.”
- The Epoch Times, December 2—State Director John Kabateck says California’s new COVID workplace presumption law is burdensome. “My point is, it’s an incredibly unreasonable, if not impossible, expectation for small employers to prove that the [COVID-19-related illness] of their employee did not happen within their workplace. And that’s a horrible burden to place on already fragile and uncertain job creators in our state.”
- Facebook, The Special Report with Areva Martin, December 2—State Director John Kabateck discusses the small-business climate with other guests for the national Facebook show. Kabateck’s segment starts at the 11:55-minute mark and ends at the 37:39-minute mark.
- CBS 8, San Diego, December 1—NFIB comments on the latest loan programs for small businesses offered by the state, the federal PPP program, and opening up Main Street.
- KCRA-TV NBC 3, Sacramento, November 25-28—State Director John Kabateck appeared on the station’s news shows a half-dozen times from November 25-28, promoting the importance of shopping small on Small Business Saturday.
- Los Angeles Times, November 24—NFIB comments on the question of whether small businesses can survive another COVID-19 surge without more financial help. The story also ran in the Daily Republic and a dozen other in-state and out-of-state media.
- Citizens Journal, November 26—NFIB news release calling on Californians to shop from their local merchants on Small Business Saturday published by online news site.
- Fox&Hounds, November 18—NFIB news release announcing its latest podcast on two new laws taking effect January 1 published by the influential political blog. The news release was also published in the Citizens Journal, the online news site for Ventura County.
- The Business Journal (Fresno), November 17—Blogger Gordon Webster, Jr. writes about two new laws taking effect January 1 that will hugely impact small-business owners and borrows from NFIB’s webpage story about its podcast discussing them.
- Southern California Record, November 17—State Director John Kabateck interviewed about the election results and latest NFIB SBET report.
- The Epoch Times, November 16—The stifling effect regulations are having on California small businesses is the subject of an interview with State Director John Kabateck.
- Associated Press, November 14—Commenting on the success rate of local ballot measures over those of state initiatives, the AP quotes California State Director John Kabateck for a story published in 70 media outlets throughout California and the nation.
- Fox&Hounds, November 11—California lawmakers failed in 2020 to protect small businesses and others against lawsuit abuse, charges State Director John Kabateck in a guest editorial on the political blog.
- The Epoch Times, November 9—Story on Prop. 15, the split-roll property tax initiative, currently failing included State Director John Kabateck quote from NFIB news release. “Small businesses throughout California are happy to see the ‘No’ vote on Proposition 15 holding a narrow lead, but they will watch to see if it will stick. It’s a direct dollars-and-cents issue for them because they are certain to be hit with largest property tax increase in California history at the worst possible time should it pass. This is the most important election result for small businesses of any.” Story also ran in the Citizens Journal, the online news site for Ventura County.
- KRLA 870 AM Radio, November 9—State Director John Kabateck gives a 13-minute interview on the election to Larry Marino, host of Sunday Morning Newsmaker. The Glendale-based station is in the heart of the Los Angeles media market.
- Forbes, November 6—State Director John Kabateck gives one reason why Californians rejected Proposition 15, which would have enacted a split-roll property tax that would have raised taxes on businesses.
- Fox&Hounds, November 5—Political blog runs NFIB’s post-election comment news release.
- Save Our Capitol, October 30—Cause group’s news release quoting California State Director John Kabateck gets published in 50 news sites across the nation. “As every Californian is being called upon to sacrifice in this unprecedented time, we are asking the governor and lawmakers to set aside this lavish project and focus on addressing the needs of struggling families and businesses. Replacing the current project with a design that is more fiscally responsible is unquestionably the right thing to do.”
- The Epoch Times, October 25—State Director John Kabateck was interviewed for a half-hour on the national media’s California Insider show. Kabateck detailed the difficulties of doing business in the state and who is really calling the shots.
- Capitol Weekly, Fox&Hounds, October 19—Both publications ran State Director John Kabateck’s guest editorial on the increase in retail theft and the importance of voting for Propositions 20 and 25. Three daily newspapers in Capitol Weekly’s network of shared content, the Visalia Times-Delta, the Record Searchlight of Redding, and The Californian in Salinas also published the editorial.
- Citizens Journal, October 18—The online news site for Ventura County reports on NFIB’s endorsement of Rep. Kevin McCarthy for reelection with a quote from State Director John Kabateck.
- KOGO-AM 600, San Diego, October 16—State Director John Kabateck tells listeners of The DeMaio Report why small business backing Proposition 25. Kabateck’s remarks begin at the 15:50-minute mark.
- KEIB-AM 1150, Los Angeles, October 7—Kris Ankarlo, host of the station’s Propositioned Podcast, interviews State Director John Kabateck, who tells listeners that voters will see right through the “smoke and mirrors” Proposition 15 proponents are using to sell their initiative. Kabateck was one of six guests; his comments come at the 6:49, 11:21, 12:25, 15:15, 15:52, 22:50; 24:01; 24:39; and 29:53-minute marks.

- The Citizens Journal, September 30—NFIB’s news release announcing its latest podcast published, in its entirety, on the Ventura County news website.
- Los Angeles Times, September 30—State Director John Kabateck tells reporter Melody Gutierrez of the Los Angeles Times why Gov. Gavin Newsom’s veto of Assembly Bill 3216, which would have forced some employers to first re-hire workers they laid off, was welcome news. Her story also ran in the North Bay Business Journal, The World News, Huntington Beach Independent, MSN, OltNews, and News Break.
- Citizens Journal, September 30—The online news source for Ventura County republishes NFIB’s news release showing nearly 90% of small business owners opposed to Prop. 21.
- Northern California Record, September 29—NFIB’s disappointment in Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signing of Senate Bill 1383 profiled in article.
- Northern California Record, September 28—NFIB asked to comment on Governor Newsom’s signing of Senate Bill 1159 into law, which creates a rebuttable presumption that workers became infected with COVID 19 on the job if certain criteria are met, and includes outbreak protocol measures for any business with five or more workers.
- Southern California Record, September 23—In two interviews for two separate stories for the same publication in the same edition, State Director John Kabateck discusses the manifest consequences of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signing of Senate Bill 1383 into law and the one bill signing he did right, “AB 1577 is one of only two bills that the legislature approved that we can think of that is actually a positive for small businesses.”

KFI is the most widely listened to station in the Los Angeles DMA and John and Ken average 741,000 weekly listeners. His interview begins at the 1:06:42 mark.
