New York’s June 28th Primary Recap

New York’s primary for statewide and Assembly elections was held on Tuesday, June 28th with results showing few surprises or upsets. In the Democrat primary for Governor, Kathy Hochul cruised to victory defeating challengers Jumaane Williams and Tom Suozzi with nearly 68 percent of the vote. Democrat Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado also defeated his two challengers, Ana Maria Archila and Diana Reyna, with 61 percent of the vote. In the Republican primary for Governor, Lee Zeldin received 44 percent of the vote, defeating three challengers: Andrew Guiliani, Rob Astorino, and Harry Wilson. There were no primaries against incumbent Republican Assembly Members, but more than 30 incumbent Democrat Assembly Members faced off against primary challengers on June 28th. Those challenges were often to the left of the incumbent and endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and/or the Working Families Party (WFP). Nearly all the Democrat incumbents were successful with the exceptions of Assemblyman Jose Rivera (AD-78, Bronx), Assemblyman Tom Abinanti (AD-92, Westchester), and Assemblyman Kevin Cahill (AD-103, Ulster/Dutchess). Due to the successful redistricting court challenges and new State Senate and Congressional district maps, New York will also have a primary on Tuesday, August 23rd for candidates running for State Senate and Congress.
