New York Primary Election Recap

New York Primary Election Recap

June 27, 2025

New York City made international news with the shocking Democratic mayoral primary victory of Democratic Socialist Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani.

Voters across New York cast their ballots on Tuesday, June 24, during the primary for county and city elections. New York City made international news with the shocking Democratic primary victory of Zohran Mamdani, a current New York State Assemblymember and Democratic Socialist. Assemblymember Mamdani ran in a crowded New York City Democratic primary field and consistently ranked second to former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the polls throughout the campaign season. In the days leading up to the election, the polls began to tighten; however, the margin of victory for Mamdani defeated Cuomo 43% to 36% (with ranked choice voting tabulations to be completed over the coming weeks). While the Democratic primary is over, the New York City Mayor’s race is still undetermined, and could be a five-way race among the following candidates in November:

Zohran Mamdani (Democrat/Working Families Party)

Andrew Cuomo (Fight and Deliver)

Eric Adams (End Anti Semitism, Safe & Affordable)

Curtis Sliwa (Republican)

Jim Walden (Independent)

Candidates for the New York City mayoral race will spend the next few weeks deciding whether to formally enter the race or not. Regardless, this race will garner significant attention, speculation, and fundraising.

There were several other notable races across the state including mayoral primary elections across the I-90 corridor:

Albany: Dorcey Applyrs (Democrat, Working Families Party) defeated three other Democratic candidates and will face Republican Rocco Perzzulo in the general election.

Buffalo: Sean Ryan (Democrat, Working Families Party) defeated incumbent Mayor Chris Scanlon and will face Republican James Gardner in the general election.

Rochester: Incumbent Mayor Malik Evans (Democrat) survived a primary from two other democratic candidates and will face off against Conservative Louis Sabo in the general election.

Syracuse: Sharon Owens (Democrat, Working Families Party) defeated two other democratic candidates and will advance to the general election against Republican Thomas Babilon.

NFIB does not engage or endorse in local races but closely monitors outcomes to help identify potential political trends that may have ramifications on statewide and Congressional races in 2026.
