Montana Third Best State for Social Mobility

What is Montana doing right to make it third best in the nation, according to the Archbridge Institute’s latest Social Mobility in the 50 States report.

There are, according to the Institute, four pillars of social mobility, “Entrepreneurship and Growth, Institutions and the Rule of Law, Education and Skills Development, and Social Capital. Scores for each pillar were combined and weighted equally to create a state’s overall social mobility score.”

On Page 41 of the report, it says, “Montana boasts several scores in the top 10, such as charity (1st), parent engagement and stability (2nd), community activities and neighbors (3rd), and taxes (6th). This makes Montana a national leader for Social Capital. However, there is room for improvement when it comes to education quality and freedom (40th) and regulation (34th) in the state.”

Last month, the Institute followed up with another report, State Solutions to Empower Upward Mobility, a series of essays with policy suggestions for states to follow.

NFIB believes a great part of Montana’s success is due to its pro-small-business policies and we are working to make sure it stays that way for generations to come.
