SB 41 would ease burden of collecting and remitting state and local sales tax with credit

Kansas Senate Considers Tax Relief for Small Retailers

TOPEKA (Jan. 26, 2023) – Small business owners are urging lawmakers to support SB 41, which would provide needed tax relief to retailers in the Sunflower State. While testifying before the Senate Assessment & Taxation Committee, NFIB State Director Dan Murray described how costly and time-consuming collecting and remitting state and local sales taxes is for retailers and small businesses. “Small businesses are tasked with collecting and remitting state and local sales taxes – essentially playing the tax man for the state of Kansas – but don’t get compensated for the long hours and administrative burden of compliance. Unlike big box stores, this burden weighs heavily on our small retailers – who don’t have an army of accountants and resources at their disposal. By providing a modest credit for compliance, this bill helps even the playing field for our small businesses. We will continue to work with the Legislature to get SB 41 to the Governor’s desk.” CLICK HERE to learn more about small businesses’ priorities for the 2023 Legislative Session.
