Running for Office as a Friend of Small Business?

Running for Office as a Friend of Small Business?

March 7, 2024 Last Edit: July 25, 2024

Knowledge of the issues is the surest way to win the support of Main Street.

Every candidate for any elective office in America advertises himself or herself as a friend of small business but once elected, most quickly forget who sent them there and why.

NFIB Oregon keeps track of those legislators who keep their word and those who don’t with a biennial report card on their votes on key small business issues. The 2021-2022 report card can be read here. The 2023-2024 report card will be published later this year.

It has been a big part of NFIB’s educational mission for 80 years to remind policymakers that small businesses are not smaller versions of big business. They have a much more difficult time than big businesses do in keeping their doors open. The following links provide brief information that NFIB Oregon, the state’s largest and leading small business association, recommends every candidate acquaint himself or herself with.

Also, check out the NFIB Path to Public Service series. This three-session, virtual program designed to help NFIB members amplify their voices and share their small business expertise in government and political campaigns.

Best of luck with your campaign. We hope you will be the voice of small business.
