AUSTIN (July 7, 2023) – “Uncertainty can be really paralyzing to a small business owner,” NFIB Texas State Director Annie Spilman said while testifying before the House of Representatives Select Study Committee on Sustainable Property Tax Relief. “They need any additional savings to put back into trying to attract and keep workers. As we sit here today, NFIB just completed our monthly jobs report, and 42 percent of our members are saying they have positions to fill that are still open. When we poll our members, they’re still having difficulty getting people in the seat, and finding skilled and qualified workers.” In addition to sound tax policy and greater transparency, Spilman also urged lawmakers to cut the inventory tax, a burdensome and time-consuming tax that continues to raise costs for small businesses. “They really need every dime they can to attract those workers and put it back into the workers in the form of wages and benefits.” CLICK HERE to watch Spilman’s full testimony (which begins at ~4:18:38). In a conversation with Austin’s Fox 7, Spilman described how rising property taxes are pushing small business owners to the brink, saying she hears from job creators daily who say they “do not have the tax reserves on hand.” WATCH: NFIB Texas Testifies in Support of Sustainable Property Tax Relief
