NFIB Opposes Legislation That Would Discriminate Against Non-Union Companies

NFIB submitted written testimony to the House Labor Committee opposing House Bill 4231, which would repeal the Fair and Open Competition in Governmental Construction Act. This Act currently prohibits union-only project labor agreements and allows all contractors, regardless of union or non-union affiliation, to have equal access to competitively bid for any and all public construction project contracts. NFIB told the committee that Project Labor Agreements discriminate against small companies, many who are non-union, who are unable to bid on these projects – shutting out local businesses and workers. NFIB also made the point that when non-union contractors – who make up the vast majority of construction firms – are prohibited from bidding on projects funded with public dollars, taxpayers are forced to pay inflated costs due to the limitations on open bidding. This is unwise stewardship of the tax dollars entrusted to government by the citizens. NFIB is joined by a number of other business groups opposing this legislation. Read the coalition letter HERE. NFIB expects swift action on this bill with the legislature attempting to get the governor’s signature before July 1st.
