NFIB is urging the Senate to swiftly support SB 907 to protect small business owners from predatory trial attorneys

SPRINGFIELD (March 19, 2026) – Appearing on KWTO’s The Elijah Haahr Show, NFIB State Director Brad Jones urged the Missouri General Assembly to protect small businesses from predatory trial attorneys who are using the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) against Main Street and demanding thousands of dollars in settlements.

During the interview, Jones described the legal abuse small business owners are facing, saying:

“One plaintiff in Kansas City sent out about 70 settlement letters,” Jones said. “They send these letters out to small business owners all across the state, including in southwest Missouri, claiming their websites is not ADA-compliant, and they say, ‘You need to either get it to be ADA-compliant, or we’re going to sue you. But, we can make this go away, if you want to settle this before. Send us $5,000 to $15,000 and this will go away.’ Here’s the thing Elijah, there is no ADA-compliance guidelines on what makes a compliant website.”

NFIB is championing Senate Bill 907, which aims to stop these trial attorneys’ attempts to force a settlement without allowing the small business to resolve the alleged issue.

Background:

Earlier this week, The Kansas City Star published an op-ed from Jones urging the Senate to quickly advance SB 907. This comes after NFIB released new paid radio advertisements, urging the General Assembly to protect small businesses. In February, the Missouri House unanimously advanced a reform to safeguard small businesses from lawsuit abuse.
