Small business owners gathered in Denver to make their voices heard in the Colorado Legislature

This week, NFIB State Director Michael Smith hosted the 2026 Small Business Day. There, local job creators heard remarks from House Republican Whip Rep. Carlos Barron, connected with fellow business owners, and heard updates on NFIB’s efforts in Denver and in Washington, D.C.

NFIB members were able to engage their lawmakers and share their opposition to policy proposals that would negatively affect their small businesses, including:

  • HB 1005, which would eliminate the second-vote requirement for unionization under the Colorado Labor Peace Act; and
  • HB 1054, which would create a costly new state OSHA bureaucracy.

Attendees also received updates on an effort NFIB is supporting to eliminate credit card swipe fees on sales taxes, which would provide immediate relief to small business owners.

Finally, NFIB members had the opportunity to visit the floor of the House of Representatives, where they were recognized.

“Having our members here in Denver to share their stories always makes a big impact,” Smith said. “It’s an important opportunity for lawmakers to better understand how the policy proposals they’re considering will affect Main Street. We will continue urging the Legislature to resist proposals that would make it more difficult to own and operate a small business in Colorado.”
