Watch Now: NFIB’s Jared Weiser Interviewed on NBC Local News

February 2, 2026

NFIB was the only business group to speak out against burdensome legislation

NFIB State Director Jared Weiser joined NBC4 (WCMH-TV) to discuss Senate Bill 143, legislation known as “ban the box”, which would prohibit private employers from inquiring about or considering the criminal background of an applicant on any initial employment application.

NFIB is leading the charge in opposition to Senate Bill 143, highlighting the issues with one-size-fits-all mandates, especially given the tight labor market.

“Small business owners believe in second chances, but what they need is flexibility from the state and not mandates that make it harder and riskier,” Weiser said. “They’re willing to look past older or nonviolent criminal offenses, but they just want all the information up front so they can make the best decision for their business, for their employees and their customers.”

NFIB’s latest research shows that 53% of small business owners are looking for workers for their open positions, but many are struggling to find qualified applicants. Small businesses are already navigating a complicated hiring environment, and lawmakers should avoid adding more red tape to the process.
