NFIB Testified on a Wide Range of Bills Last Month

As the 2025 legislative session commences and hearings continue before the monthlong August recess, NFIB provided testimony on several pieces of legislation that will impact small businesses.

32 Hour Workweek – NFIB opposed a proposal to limit workers to 32 hours per week. Any additional time over 32 hours would require time-and-a-half pay.

Paid Time to Vote – Testimony was submitted opposing a bill that passed the House last year that would demand employers provide up to 3 hours paid time at the beginning or end of a shift to allow workers to vote. If an employer refuses to provide the paid time, the worker is owed a days’ pay as a penalty on the business.

Prenatal Leave – NFIB voiced concerns with a bill mandating businesses of all sizes provide 24 hours of prenatal leave, as well as 10 hours of leave for corresponding partner leave.

Polystyrene Ban – Testimony was offered opposing legislation to ban polystyrene takeout containers, demanding restaurants use more expensive biodegradable alternatives.

Single Payer Healthcare – NFIB voiced opposition to create a government run healthcare system.

Workplace Bullying – NFIB testified before the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development opposing legislation will provide workers with increased opportunities to sue employers in what would be considered workplace bullying incidents. The bill offers a broad definition of workplace bullying and makes employers legally liable for so-called bullying incidents.

Temperature Laws – NFIB testified at the same hearing on a bill that sets a wide range of new rules employers must follow when it comes to hot and cold temperatures for both indoor and outdoor jobs. Cold temperatures rules are triggered at 60 degrees. The bill mandates certain PPE be provided, demands specific thermometers are used, creates new break laws, and opens employers to legal action.
