NFIB Iowa Joins Statement About Costly Health Care Mandate

NFIB Iowa joins other Iowa organizations in expressing how state's costly health care mandate will impact businesses

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) issued a joint statement with the Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI), Iowa Bankers Association (IBA), and Iowa Business Council about the Iowa Legislature passing the costliest health care mandate in state history.

“At a time when businesses are tightening their belts and working to avoid layoffs, legislation like SF 383 places additional strain on small businesses across the state. The bill, which passed the House today and is now headed to the Governor for her consideration, is estimated to cost Iowans an additional $340 million annually.

The business community advocated for a targeted amendment that would have limited the $10.68 dispensing fee to independent pharmacies with less than $250 million in annual revenue—ensuring support for true small businesses without saddling all Iowans with higher costs. Unfortunately, the Legislature rejected that proposal.

As Congress and the President work to reduce the cost of prescription drugs, the Iowa Legislature has taken a different path and voted to significantly increase costs. SF 383 is believed to be the most expensive health care mandate ever passed in Iowa history. This is a step in the wrong direction for Iowans, employers, and the state economy.”
