NFIB Testifies in Support of Several Tax Relief Proposals for Kansans

March 4, 2025

Lawmakers considered several bills to provide meaningful tax relief for Kansans.

This week, the Kansas Legislature considered several bills to provide meaningful tax relief for Kansans. Testifying on behalf of small business owners in the state, NFIB State Director Dan Murray urged lawmakers to make Kansas’ tax code competitive with neighboring states and prioritize economic growth.

“We urge the legislature and the Governor to send hard-earned taxpayer dollars back to Main Street, where small business owners can reinvest in their employees and businesses,” Murray said.

Here are just a handful of bills addressing tax relief NFIB is advocating for on your behalf:

  • SB 195: Establishes a property tax taskforce in Kansas to study and recommend improvements to the state’s property tax system. NFIB SUPPORTS SB 195.
  • SB 280: Requires the approval by a majority of electors voting at an election for the governing body of any taxing entity to increase its total amount of property tax to be levied by more than the annual rate of inflation, with exceptions. NFIB SUPPORTS SB 280.
  • SB 259 & HB 2318: Creates a mechanism for automatic income tax rate reductions that would be triggered by revenue collections exceeding inflation-adjusted baseline amounts. NFIB SUPPORTS SB 259 & HB 2318.
  • HB 2396: Creates a protest petition process that allows voters to challenge excessive property tax increases. NFIB SUPPORTS HB 2396.

Ahead of the legislative session, NFIB Kansas members identified property tax relief as their number one priority, with more than eighty-eight percent of members reducing the statewide property tax mill levy.
