Important Takeaways from New York's 2023 Election Results

On November 8th, New Yorkers headed to the polls. There were several notable local races across the state, including mayors and country executives. Voters kept upstate county executives in office while flipping several mayoral seats, with Republicans maintaining a stronghold on Long Island. Even though these races typically see lower turnout than a presidential year, local races have an important impact on voters as these elected officials control local policies and projects, property taxes, and other decisions that impact Main Street. Here is a rundown of the most widely watched races across the state:   Albany County Democratic Executive Dan McCoy ran unopposed for a fourth term.   Erie County Democratic Executive Mark Poloncarz became the first county leader to win a fourth term.   Onondaga County Republican Ryan McMahon secured a second term over Democrat Bill Kinne.   Monroe County Executive Adam Bello secured a second term over his Republican opponent, and Democrats took over control of the Monroe County Legislature.   Suffolk County Republican Ed Romaine won the race to succeed Democratic County Executive Steve Bellone.   New York City Council Due to redistricting, all 51 New York City Council seats were up for reelection in 2023. Here are results from the two notable races:   Bronx Republican Kristy Marmorato defeated Democratic incumbent Councilor Marjorie Velázquez. Marmorato will be the Bronx’s first Republican elected official at any level of government in over two decades.   Brooklyn Democrat Justin Brannan won over former Democrat and current Republican Ari Kagan, two incumbents who ran against each other because of redistricting.
