NFIB Cheers Gov. Lamont's Announcement of UI Trust Fund Pandemic Debt Retirement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HARTFORD, CT (November 8, 2023) The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the nation’s leading small business advocacy group, released the following statement by State Director Andy Markowski in response to the announcement by Gov. Ned Lamont today that the state has repaid the $1.2 billion Trust Fund loan that was used to cover nearly $11 billion in pandemic unemployment payments: “Gov. Lamont’s announcement today is welcome news for Connecticut’s small businesses,” said Andy Markowski, NFIB State Director in Connecticut. “NFIB advocated strongly for this use of federal pandemic relief funds, as most states have done, and we appreciate Gov. Lamont’s leadership and the legislature in making this a priority. This is good news for employers, demonstrates fiscal prudence, and puts the Trust Fund balance into a good place to prevent future burdens on employers. Retiring the Trust Fund’s pandemic debt ensures that Main Street businesses across Connecticut will not be saddled with an increase in the federal unemployment taxes they pay starting next January 1st, and this helps small business owners to do what they do best – help keep Connecticut’s economy running.”
